Heterogeneity in rent-seeking contests with multiple stages: Theory and experimental evidence

چکیده
This paper investigates how heterogeneity in contestants investment costs affects the competition intensity a dynamic elimination contest. Theory predicts that absolute level of has no effect on homogeneous interactions. Relative cost differences heterogeneous interactions, however, reduce equilibrium expenditures. Evidence from lab experiments for treatments with participants is qualitatively line theoretical prediction. The expenditures positive rather than negative, all treatments.

Rent-setting in multiple winner rent-seeking contests
In this paper, we analyze a multiple winner rent-seeking contest where the number of winners is set by a self-interested regulator. The winners receive a license to compete in a market. The structure of competition in the market influences the number of winners through the preferences of the regulator. The model indicates that Cournot competitors can be better off than firms that are able to co...

This paper shows that a policy that uniformly increases contestants’ effort costs can lead to an increase in total effort. In asymmetric settings, this “levels the playing field” and therefore encourages weaker players (who otherwise would have stayed out) to enter. Paradoxically, a contest designer whose only objective is to maximize total effort may thus wish to make rent-seeking “more diffic...
متن کاملRent-Seeking Group Contests with Private Information
A model of rent-seeking group contest is developed. The contested good is a local public good. Individuals have private information concerning their valuation for the contested good. I restrict effort levels to be dichotomous, allowing me in turn tractability of the equilibria. I show existence of an equilibrium. All contestants exert positive expected effort in equilibrium. From simulation res...
متن کاملRent-Seeking Contests with Incomplete Information
We consider rent-seeking contests with two players that each have private information about their own cost of effort. We consider both discrete and continuous distributions of costs and give results for each case, focusing on existence of equilibria. JEL Classification: D72; C72
