‘Here and There, Then and Now’: Envisioning a Palimpsest Methodology

Black feminisms challenge Western conceptions of linearity as an optic for understanding the experiences folx in United States social imaginary. As such, this article centers that and minoritized folx, historical legacies carry lingering effects what may seem over done with. These tensions converge on M. Jacqui Alexander (2005) called palimpsest, or “a parchment has been inscribed two three times, previous text having imperfectly erased” (Alexander, 2005, p. 190). A framing time realities palimpsestic, imperfect erasure, suggests past is visible acting upon present. The potential a palimpsest methodology rests ethical entanglements body, memory, space-time afterlives with respect to existing tendencies reliable possibilities. Methodologically, we propose necessarily reads data researcher positionalities woven together, written over, grappling one another.
