Fetal hemoglobin (HbF) synthesis in baboons, Papio cynocephalus. Analysis of fetal and adult hemoglobin synthesis during fetal development.

Fetal hemoglobin (HbF) and adult hemoglobin (HbA) synthesis was studied in fetal baboons, Papio cynocephalus, to determine the normal pattern of hemoglobin production during fetal development. Fetuses ranging from 53 to 180 days gestation (term gestation 184 days) were used. Erythroid cells were incubated with 3H-L-leucine, and the rates of globin chain synthesis and the distribution of radioac...

A murine model for the switch from fetal to adult hemoglobin during ontogeny.

In murine erythroleukemia cells, the minor/major hemoglobin (Hb) ratio depends on the cell line and the inducing agent. To determine whether mouse minor hemoglobin is a "fetal" hemoglobin in vivo, globin chain composition and synthesis rates were determined in DBA/2 mice of various ages ranging from 14-day embryos to > 6-mo adults. Globin chains were separated by electrophoresis on polyacrylami...

Development of the dendritic cell system during mouse ontogeny.

Based on the view that the efficacy of the immune system is associated with the maturation state of the immune cells, including dendritic cells (DC), we investigated the development and functional potential of conventional DC and plasmacytoid pre-DC (p-preDC) in spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes during mouse development. Both CD11c+ DC and CD45RA+ p-preDC were detected in small numbers in the thy...

Functional Changes Of Fetal Muscle Acetylcholine Receptor During Mouse Development.

In developing muscles in vivo and in vitro, the acetylcholine receptor gamma-subunit exists in two splice variants, conferring different single-channel open durations (tau(op)) to reconstituted receptors. In mouse muscles, tau(op) changes around birth, possibly as receptors incorporate either variant of gamma-subunit. This might be relevant to the concomitant maturation of muscle innervation.

Expression and localization of aromatase during fetal mouse testis development

BACKGROUND Both androgens and estrogens are necessary to ensure proper testis development and function. Studies on endocrine disruptors have highlighted the importance of maintaining the balance between androgens and estrogens during fetal development, when testis is highly sensitive to environmental disturbances. This balance is regulated mainly through an enzymatic cascade that converts irrev...
