Heatwaves in South Asia: Characterization, Consequences on Human Health, and Adaptation Strategies

South Asia, with more than one-fifth of the world’s population, is highly vulnerable to heatwaves and associated health consequences. The population experiences considerably higher residential vulnerability due limited infrastructural capacities, economic resources, environmental quality deficiencies. However, a number studies are available from region account for effects heatwaves. Therefore, this study has conducted comprehensive review characterize across Asian countries. explicitly identifies population’s during recent years heatwave management policies in region. literature suggests increased heat-related deaths most countries, few exceptions. In addition, analysis historical temperature records identified an upward trend annual average highlights various definitions that have been used facilitate comparative evidence. only countries functional plans majorly lack community preparedness potential community- residential-based adaptation strategies mitigate heat discomfort. As prospective solutions, recommends such as blue–green spaces, indoor passive cooling, adjustments, action plans, etc. measures require holistic amalgamation different stakeholders fabricate heatwave-resilient cities.
