Hearing Their Voices: Self Advocacy Strategies for People with Intellectual Disabilities in South Africa

This study investigated strategies for people with intellectual disabilities to self-advocate inclusion of their priorities in social policy processes South Africa. Method: Self advocacy were identified through a scoping literature review, review self toolkits and semi structured interviews other stakeholders working at non-governmental disabled people’s organisations. These data sources triangulated identify upskill support young adults share opinions perspectives deepen the diversity voices engaged advocacy. Results: Data triangulation three core advocacy, person, written engagement media. Discussion: Inclusion civic political life is crucial, will only be achieved if advocates are accepted into policy-making arena. The cycle perpetuating exclusion needs disrupted, give an say decisions that have impact on lives. Conclusion: Adopting which enable activities holds potential diversifying brought public participation development implementation, currently primarily domain non-disabled citizens.
