Health Risk from Toxic Metals in Wild Rice Grown in Copper Mining-Impacted Sediments

چکیده
Northern wild rice is of great dietary and cultural importance to the Native American population in Upper Peninsula Michigan. Millions tons mine tailings were discharged into Lake Superior other inland lakes during copper mining boom early 20th century this area. This includes L’Anse Bay, located within Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) reservation. Since restoration being encouraged by KBIC, we investigated distribution toxic metals sediments, water, their potential impact on human health from two locations. Sand Point sloughs a nearby lake, Plumbago, sampled for sediment, rice, risk exposure was assessed. Arsenic stood out as element that had highest bioaccumulation at both Risk calculations showed hazard index (HI) value seeds sites high. Data indicate carcinogenic non-carcinogenic risks As Cd Cr Plumbago.

Mining and Toxic Metals
How Mining Releases Toxic Metals Large amounts of waste rock and tailings contaminated with toxic metals can be produced by mine sites. In the case of the Donlin Creek mine, there are only 0.072 ounces of gold for every ton of ore, a figure that does not take into account the waste rock. Toxic substances contained within the rock and tailings are more easily released once these substances are p...
متن کاملMechanisms Controlling Arsenic Uptake in Rice Grown in Mining Impacted Regions in South China
Foods produced on soils impacted by Pb-Zn mining activities are a potential health risk due to plant uptake of the arsenic (As) associated with such mining. A field survey was undertaken in two Pb-Zn mining-impacted paddy fields in Guangdong Province, China to assess As accumulation and translocation, as well as other factors influencing As in twelve commonly grown rice cultivars. The results s...
متن کاملPublic health risk assessment of chromium intake from vegetable grown in the wastewater irrigated site in Bangladesh
There are many potential risks to human health from heavy metal contamination of vegetables resulting from wastewater irrigated sites. This study was carried out to assess the concentration of chromium (Cr) and the risk to human health by chromium through the intake of locally grown vegetables collected from wastewater irrigated agricultural fields. Twenty-seven samples of 9 (nine) different ty...

The objective of this study was to assess the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr and Fe) in the muscles of five fish species (Sander lucioperca, Liza auratus, Alosa caspia, Cyprinus carpio and Liza saliens) from Gorgan Bay in the south-eastern Caspian Sea, in order to determine the value daily intake of heavy metals by consumption of fish and human health risk assessment. The concentra...
