Health Related Challenges of Rural Elderly Living in Co-Residential Family Care Arrangements

Family plays an indispensable role in the care and support of rising number older people particularly developing countries like Ethiopia where system public transfer is minimal. Previous studies focus on institutionalized urban-dwelling elderly with little attention to informal paradigm rural areas. This study aims explore health-related experiences dependent who get within a family setting. A phenomenology method was used, in-depth interviews were employed collect data from purposively sampled elders. Data inductively coded developed into themes. Physical health psychosocial challenges areas include vision mobility problems; loneliness, grief, sadness; feelings inferiority family; abuse neglect; lack meaningful activities; feeling being burden family. Families often experience economic conditions that make it difficult for them provide adequate care. The findings suggest actions policymakers other stakeholders could undertake enhance wellbeing welfare Ethiopia, including improved access supportive technologies, day facilities social engagement healthcare, caregivers.
