Hardwired to attack. Candidates’ personality traits and negative campaigning in three European countries

Abstract A growing body of studies shows that the reasons for competing candidates to “go negative” on their opponents during elections—that is, attacking instead promoting own programs or ideas stem from strategic considerations. Yet, existing research has, at this stage, failed assess whether candidates’ personality traits also play a role. In article, we bridge gap between work in political psychology and communication study what extent are linked with use negative campaigning strategies. We rely candidate survey data recent elections three countries—Germany (2017), Switzerland (2019), Finland (2019). The includes self-reported measures “Big Five” (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, openness) attacks towards campaign. Controlling usual suspects driving show latter is associated low agreeableness (marginally) high extraversion conscientiousness. role focus an attack (issue vs. character attacks) somewhat less clear-cut.
