Hamiltonian Perturbation Theory
The variational formulation for Lie-transform Hamiltonian perturbation theory is presented in terms of an action functional defined on a two-dimensional parameter space. A fundamental equation in Hamiltonian perturbation theory is shown to result from the freedom of choice of the integration path for the action functional.

A comparative discussion of the normal form and action angle variable method is presented in a tutorial way. Normal forms are introduced by Lie series which avoid mixed variable canonical transformations. The main interest is focused on establishing a third integral of motion for the transformed Hamiltonian truncated at finite order of the perturbation parameter. In particular, for the case of ...

where / is a smooth function. The basic theory of numerical methods for (1) has been known for more than thirty years, see e.g. [8]. This theory, in tandem with practical experimentation, has led to the development of general software packages for the efficient solution of (1). It is perhaps remarkable that both the theory and the packages do not take into account any structure the problem may ...

We study approximate solutions to the Schrödinger equation iε∂ψt(x)/∂t = H(x,−iε∇x)ψt(x) with the Hamiltonian H the Weyl quantization of the symbol H(q, p) taking values in the space of bounded operators on the Hilbert space Hf of fast “internal” degrees of freedom. By assumption H(q, p) has an isolated energy band. We prove that interband transitions are suppressed to any order in ε. As a cons...
متن کاملInvariant tori for Hamiltonian PDE
Many of the central equations of mathematical physics, the nonlinear wave equation, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the Euler equations for free surfaces, can be posed as Hamiltonian systems with infinitely many degrees of freedom. In a neighborhood of an equilibrium, the linearized equations are those of a harmonic oscillator and thus solutions exhibit periodic and quasi-periodic motion. T...
