Novel High Transverse Momentum Phenomena in Hadronic and Nuclear Collisions
I discuss a number of novel phenomenological features of QCD in high transverse momentum reactions. The presence of direct higher-twist processes, where a proton is produced directly in the hard subprocess, can explain the “baryon anomaly" – the large proton-to-pion ratio seen at RHIC in high centrality heavy ion collisions. Direct hadronic processes can also account for the deviation from lead...
متن کاملSpin densities in the transverse plane and generalized transversity distributions
We show how generalized quark distributions in the nucleon describe the density of polarized quarks in the impact parameter plane, both for longitudinal and transverse polarization of the quark and the nucleon. This density representation entails positivity bounds including chiral-odd distributions, which tighten the known bounds in the chiral-even sector. Using the quark equations of motion, w...
متن کاملHadronic and Electromagnetic Interactions at Large Transverse Momentum*
The scaling laws of inclusive and exclusive processes at large transverse momentum are reviewed. Their theoretical interpretation in terms of composite models for the hadrons is then discussed. The observed inverse power-law behavior of the invariant cross sections at fixed invariant ratios is found to agree with the degrees of freedom suggested by the simple dimensional counting in the quark m...
متن کاملTransverse momentum dependent quark densities from Lattice QCD
We study transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) with non-local operators in lattice QCD, using MILC/LHPC lattices. We discuss the basic concepts of the method, including renormalization of the gauge link. Results obtained with a simplified operator geometry show visible dipole deformations of spin-dependent quark momentum densities.
متن کاملThe structure of large logarithmic corrections at small transverse momentum in hadronic collisions
We consider the region of small transverse momenta in the production of high-mass systems in hadronic collisions. By using the current knowledge on the infrared behaviour of tree-level and one-loop QCD amplitudes at O(α2 S), we analytically compute the general form of the logarithmically-enhanced contributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. By comparing the results with qT ...
