Habitat associations of wintering dabbling ducks in the Arkansas Mississippi Alluvial Valley: implications for waterfowl management beyond the mallard

چکیده
Mallard Anas platyrhynchos ecology drives current habitat management strategies for most waterfowl; however, are these suitable other dabbling duck species? Migratory waterfowl, in addition to mallards, the lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley experience heavy hunting pressure, so should be appropriate a broader array of species. We investigated associations ducks (dabblers) Arkansas portion and factors driving winter distributions. modeled aerial survey data over seven years with Bayesian spatio–temporal models test what landscape covariates affected dabbler use. found that distributions were closely associated open water, inundated surface water agricultural such as rice, soybeans fallow fields. Surface extent rice field key drivers high abundances. These habitat–covariate same used by suggesting focused on mallards likely is dabblers, at least broad scale our study.

Responses of Bats to Forest Fragmentation in the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley, Arkansas, USA
Intense conversion of bottomland hardwood forests to rice and soybeans in the Mississippi River Valley of Arkansas has restricted the remaining forest to isolated fragments. Habitat fragmentation has proven to be detrimental to population sustainability of several species, and is the subject of intense study with often species and latitude specific responses. We compared both coarse land area c...

Habitat Selection and Activities of Dabbling Ducks during Non-Breeding Periods
Western Tennessee is an important region for waterfowl during non-breeding periods, supporting >40% of the Mississippi Flyway population of American black ducks (Anas rubripes). Understanding habitat selection and activities of waterfowl during the non-breeding period is important for directed habitat management on national wildlife refuges and in other wetlands important in meeting regional wa...
متن کاملData on birds and habitat associated with forest management on public conservation areas in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley
This data article contains data collected from 2006-2012 in forests located on 31 State or Federal conservation lands in or adjacent to the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. We present the location, treatment type, and silvicultural age of data collection locations. Presented data on bird detections and forest habitat were collected during avian point counts and associated forest habitat plots and l...
متن کاملDistribution and variability of redox zones controlling spatial variability of arsenic in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer, southeastern Arkansas.
Twenty one of 118 irrigation water wells in the shallow (25-30 m thick) Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer in the Bayou Bartholomew watershed, southeastern Arkansas had arsenic (As) concentrations (<0.5 to 77 microg/L) exceeding 10 microg/L. Sediment and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed from the sites of the highest, median, and lowest concentrations of As in groundwater i...
