Dowling group geometries and the critical problem

This paper relates the critical problem of Crapo and Rota [ " On the Foundations of Combinatorial Theory: Combinatorial Geometries, " M.I.T. Press, Cambridge, MA, 19703 to Dowling group geometries. If A is a finite group, Q,(A) is the rank-r Dowling group geometry over A, and M is a rank-r matroid embeddable as a minor of Q,(A), then it is shown that the critical exponent of M over A is well de...

On Dowling geometries of infinite groups

A finite subgeometry of a Dowling geometry for an infinite group is exhibited, which cannot be embedded in a Dowling geometry for any finite group; this provides a negative answer to a question of Bonin. The question addressed herein is motivated by the following fundamental result of Rado, concerning the embeddability of finite geometries in projective geometries [Ra, Theorem 4]: Theorem. Ever...

Nested set complexes of Dowling lattices and complexes of Dowling trees

Given a finite group G and a natural number n, we study the structure of the complex of nested sets of the associated Dowling lattice Qn(G) (Proc. Internat. Sympos., 1971, pp. 101–115) and of its subposet of the G-symmetric partitions Qn(G) which was recently introduced by Hultman (http://www.math.kth.se/ ~hultman/, 2006), together with the complex of G-symmetric phylogenetic trees T G n . Hult...

Adapting Decision Trees for Learning Selectional Restrictions

This paper describes the implementation of a system that automatically learns selectional restrictions for individual senses of polysemous verbs from subject-object relationships. The selectional restrictions are inferred from an adaptation of decision tree induction, and are bound to the syntactic relations that realize them as part of a move toward automated construction of verb predicates.

In Ehresmann’s Footsteps: from Group Geometries to Groupoid Geometries

The geometric understanding of Cartan connections led Charles Ehresmann from the Erlangen program of (abstract) transformation groups to the enlarged program of Lie groupoid actions, via the basic concept of structural groupoid acting through the fibres of a (smooth) principal fibre bundle or of its associated bundles, and the basic examples stemming from the manifold of jets (fibred by its sou...
