Two nearby M dwarf binaries from 2 MASS

We report the discovery of two binary M dwarf systems in the immediate solar neighborhood using 2MASS. The first is an M6.5 companion to the nearby G star HD 86728 (Gl 376). The known properties of HD 86728 indicate that the M dwarf (Gl 376B) is old, metal-rich and only 14.9 parsecs away. The M dwarf is highly active with both Hα and X-ray emission. Thus, Gl 376B offers the opportunity to study...

2massi J1315309−264951: an L Dwarf with Strong and Variable Hα Emission

2MASSI J1315309−264951 is an L3 dwarf with strong Hα emission discovered in the course of a colorselected survey for active galactic nuclei using the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS). The strength of its Hα emission decreased by about a factor of two between two epochs separated by 137 days. This is the first time that variable Hα emission has been reported in an L dwarf, and is probably the f...

2mass 1315−2649: a High Proper Motion L Dwarf with Strong Hα Emission

In Hall (2002) I reported that 2MASSI J1315309−264951 is an L dwarf with strong Hα emission. Two spectroscopic epochs appeared to show that the Hα was variable, decreasing from 121 Å to 25 Å EW, which I interpreted as a flare during the first observation. Gizis (2002) independently discovered this object, and his intermediate spectroscopic epoch shows Hα with 97 Å EW. A new fourth epoch of spec...

A Deeper Look at Faint Hα Emission in Nearby Dwarf Galaxies

We present deep Hα imaging of three nearby dwarf galaxies, carefully selected to optimize observations with the Maryland-Magellan Tunable Filter (MMTF) on the Magellan 6.5m telescope. An effective bandpass of ∼13Å is used, and the images reach 3σ flux limits of ∼8×10−18 ergs s−1 cm−2, which is about an order of magnitude lower than standard narrowband observations obtained by the most recent ge...

The M Dwarf GJ 436 and its Neptune - Mass Planet

We determine stellar parameters for the M dwarf GJ 436 that hosts a Neptunemass planet. We employ primarily spectral modeling at low and high resolution, examining the agreement between model and observed optical spectra of five comparison stars of type, M0-M3. Modeling high resolution optical spectra suffers from uncertainties in TiO transitions, affecting the predicted strengths of both atomi...
