Effect of high oxygen tensions on the growth of selected, aerobic, gram-negative, athogenic bacteria.
The in vitro effects of high O(2) tensions (P(O2)) on aerobic, enteric pathogens were examined at pressures of up to 3 atm absolute. Organisms from the genera Salmonella, Shigella, and Vibrio were usually subjected to 24-hr exposures. Tensions of 0.87, 1.87, and 2.87 atm absolute of O(2) (plus traces of CO(2) and N(2)) became progressively inhibitory for Salmonella and Shigella growth, but were...
متن کاملThe carbon source influences the efflux pump-mediated antimicrobial resistance in clinically important Gram-negative bacteria.
OBJECTIVES Multidrug efflux pumps are proteins known to play an important role in resistance in bacteria. These proteins are located in the inner membrane (IM), together with many other proteins, including inducible permeases that participate in the uptake of non-phosphotransferase system (PTS) carbohydrates (i.e. carbohydrates uptaken by mechanisms other than the PTS). However, lipid bilayer s...
متن کاملEvaluation of Cathra system for identifying gram negative aerobic bacteria.
The Cathra system is a commercial multipoint inoculation method for the identification of aerobic Gram negative bacteria. The system uses a replicator technique in which 21 different agar media can be inoculated simultaneously with 36 organisms. Identifications are made by use of a special computer database. The performance of this system was compared with that of the API 20E for the identifica...
متن کاملIn vitro activity of ciprofloxacin against aerobic gram-negative bacteria.
For 177 gram-negative isolates, the MICs for ciprofloxacin ranged from 0.02 microgram/ml (Escherichia coli) to 0.31 microgram/ml (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). In time-kill curves, ciprofloxacin at 8 X the MIC almost completely killed 10(6) CFU of P. aeruginosa by 24 h. Ciprofloxacin at 4 X the MIC allowed bacterial regrowth by 24 h, with development of partial resistance to ciprofloxacin.
متن کاملPoplar lignin decomposition by gram-negative aerobic bacteria.
Eleven gram-negative aerobic bacteria (Pseudomonadaceae and Neisseriaceae) out of 122 soil isolates were selected for their ability to assimilate poplar dioxane lignin without a cosubstrate. Dioxane lignin and milled wood lignin degradation rates ranged between 20 and 40% of initial content after 7 days in mineral medium, as determined by a loss of absorbance at 280 nm; 10 strains could degrade...
