Growing Space Management in Boreal Mixedwood Forests: 22 Year Results

چکیده
Boreal mixed forests of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) and white spruce (Picea glauca) can provide higher outputs many ecosystem goods services, combined with resilience for changing environmental conditions. In this study, we examine the growth over a range stand compositions created by spot broadcast treatments broadleaves using manual chemical means, spacing, untreated control. Twenty-two growing seasons postharvest, treatment responses broadleaf densities spatial arrangements, reflected in significant differences heights diameters mixedwood component. At early seral stage, have generated diversity both tree species composition structure. Modeling structures different provided outcomes ranging from pure conifer to dominated when assessed merchantable volumes. Broadleaf manipulations changed relative proportion mixture, achieving variety potential landscape stand-level goals. Treatment were often not statistically until at least 16 years after initiation. Monitoring achievement management goals will require longer time periods than currently employed or monocultures.

Response of female beetles to LIDAR derived topographic variables in Eastern boreal mixedwood forests (Coleoptera, Carabidae)
Biodiversity monitoring is increasingly being bolstered with high resolution data derived from remote sensing such as LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). We derived a series of topographical variables, including slope, azimuth, ground curvature and flow accumulation from LIDAR images and compared these to captures of female carabids in pitfall traps in Eastern boreal mixedwood forests. We deve...
متن کاملBurning Potential of Fire Refuges in the Boreal Mixedwood Forest
In boreal ecosystems, wildfire severity (i.e., the extent of fire-related tree mortality) is affected by environmental conditions and fire intensity. A burned area usually includes tree patches that partially or entirely escaped fire. There are two types of post-fire residual patches: (1) patches that only escaped the last fire; and (2) patches with lower fire susceptibility, also called fire r...
متن کاملEcosystem Responses to Partial Harvesting in Eastern Boreal Mixedwood Stands
Partial harvesting has been proposed as a key aspect to implementing ecosystem management in the Canadian boreal forest. We report on a replicated experiment located in boreal mixedwoods of Northwestern Quebec. In the winter of 2000–2001, two partial harvesting treatments, one using a dispersed pattern, and a second, which created a (400 m) gap pattern, were applied to a 90-year-old aspen-domin...

متن کاملCharacterizing woodland caribou habitat in sub-boreal and boreal forests
Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) are sensitive to changes in understory vegetation resulting from forest harvesting and are, therefore, of special concern for foresters and habitat biologists. Effective management of this species requires reliable habitat inventories which, because of the large heterogeneous areas over which caribou range, can be costly. We used Landsat Thematic Map...
