Groundwater Recharge Assessment Using WetSpass and MODFLOW Coupling: The Case of Hormat-Golina Sub-basin, Northern Ethiopia

Water scarcity in northern Ethiopia, as well its socio-economic relevance terms of water demand for agriculture and domestic use, are at the root search new groundwater resources development models that can be used to control manage resource. The recharge Hormat-Golina sub basin was assessed using WetSpass-MODFLOW coupling. goal this paper is assess sub-basin. These findings then simulate hydraulic head distribution MODFLOW flow simulation model. By comparing measured simulated heads, steady state calibration obtained. WetSpass calculated mean annual evapotranspiration, surface runoff, 516.6, 204.9, 35.6 mm, respectively. Groundwater accounted 4.7% precipitation, while actual evapotranspiration runoff 27% 68% In such seasonal variations, 9.37 29.86 m winter (dry season), 9.53 29.89 summer (wet 9.58 30.17 stress periods (recharges). For all periods, estimated heads fit with ones, a correlation coefficient 0.86 (summer, winter, recharge). To preserve resource's long-term viability, balance between projected abstraction rates supply must considered future resource plans valley.
