Green Synthesis of Bioactive Hydroxyapatite/Cellulose Composites from Food Industrial Wastes

Abstract This work aimed at conversion of worthless indurtial wastes to valuable product. Herein, bioactive composites based on bacterial cellulose (BC) and eggshell or eggshell-derived hydroxyapatite (HAp) were prepared by a green method using Gluconacetobacter xylinum bacteria. The effect addition (BC/Eg) HAp (BC/HAp-Eg) the yield, biodegradation biocompatibility was studied. For comparison, derived from chemical precursors synthesized (BC/HAp-ch). resultant characterized XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX. Furthermore, bioactivity assessed in SBF, cell viability studied against oral normal cells. results showed that productivity BC applied HAp-derived (1.83 g/L) higher than (1.37 g/L). Interestingly, converted Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 during incubation culture medium, while formed as secondary phase when either chemically-derived. vitro test SBF all induced formation bone-like apatite layer their surface with Ca/P ratio, 1.49, 1.35, 1.41 for BC/Eg, BC/HAp-ch, BC/HAp-Eg, respectively, near ratio natural HAp. Finally, confirmed good composites. However, high sample concentration (250 µg/mL), BC/HA-Eg (95.2%) BC/Eg (80.5%) BC/HA-ch (86.2%). In conclusion, waste could be used directly produce without need convert it which reduced cost production thus has economic return. Obiviously, can act calcium, organic matter source, pH preservation, nuterilizing agent along potential instead costly buffering medium further increased production.
