An Evidence Based Time-Frequency Search Method for Gravitational Waves from Pulsar Glitches
We review and expand on a Bayesian model selection technique for the detection of gravitational waves from neutron star ring-downs associated with pulsar glitches. The algorithm works with power spectral densities constructed from overlapping time segments of gravitational wave data. Consequently, the original approach was at risk of falsely identifying multiple signals where only one signal wa...
متن کاملObservations of Fourteen Pulsar Glitches
About 76 glitches in 25 pulsars have been reported to date. Most glitches are ‘giant’, with fractional increases of frequency ∆ν0/ν0 ∼ 10 . 25 glitches were analysed and presented by Shemar & Lyne (1996) who detected them mainly at Jodrell Bank during the monitoring of a sample of 279 pulsars in a regular timing programme up to MJD 49500. This paper is a continuation of their work up to MJD 505...
متن کاملStatistical characterization of pulsar glitches and their potential impact on searches for continuous gravitational waves
Continuous gravitational waves from neutron stars could provide an invaluable resource to learn about their interior physics. A common search method involves matched-filtering a modeled template against the noisy gravitational-wave data to find signals. This method suffers a mismatch (i.e. relative loss of signal-to-noise ratio) if the signal deviates from the template. One possible instance in...
متن کاملgluon condensate in pulsar cores explain pulsar glitches ? Raka
Making use of the possibility that gluon condensate can be formed in neutron star core, we study the vortex pinning force between the crust and the interior of the neutron star. Our estimations indicate an increase in pinning strength with the age of the neutron star. This helps in explaining observed pulsar glitches and removes some difficulties faced by vortex creep model.
متن کاملA cellular automaton model of pulsar glitches
A cellular automaton model of pulsar glitches is described, based on the superfluid vortex unpinning paradigm. Recent analyses of pulsar glitch data suggest that glitches result from scale-invariant avalanches (Melatos et al. 2007), which are consistent with a self-organized critical system (SOCS). A cellular automaton provides a computationally efficient means of modelling the collective behav...
