Grass bud responses to fire in a semiarid savanna system

چکیده
Increasingly, land managers have attempted to use extreme prescribed fire as a method address woody plant encroachment in savanna ecosystems. The effect that these fires on herbaceous vegetation is poorly understood. We experimentally examined immediate (<24 hr) bud response of two dominant graminoids, C3 caespitose grass, Nassella leucotricha, and C4 stoloniferous Hilaria belangeri, following varying energy (J/m2) semiarid the Edwards Plateau ecoregion Texas. Treatments included high- low-energy determined by contrasting fuel loading no burn (control) treatment. Belowground axillary buds were counted their activities classified determine effects activity, dormancy, mortality. High-energy burns resulted mortality N. leucotricha H. belangeri (p < .05). Active decreased high-energy for both species In contrast, remained constant control. treatment, 100% (n = 24) individuals resprouted while only 25% .0001) 3 weeks treatment application. Bud depths differed between may account this divergence, with average 1.3 cm deeper than .0001). Synthesis applications: Our results suggest directly affects activity through soil heating species. It imperative understand how impacts banks grasses better predict grass increased management.

Impulsive Modelling for Tree-grass Interactions in Fire-prone Savanna
The study of tree-grass interactions in savanna (fires prone or not) remains an important issue for research. In African savanna, it is well known that fire is a major disturbance that shapes tree-grass ratio along a rainfall gradient. Several mathematical models have been developed that addressed fire prone savanna dynamics. Such models rely mostly on continuous-time modelling of tree-grass co...
متن کاملSoil carbon and nitrogen storage in response to fire in a temperate mixed-grass savanna.
Vegetation fires may alter the quantity and quality of organic matter inputs to soil, rates of organic matter decay, and environmental factors that influence those processes. However, few studies have evaluated the impacts of this land management technique on soil organic carbon (SOC) and total N in grasslands and savannas. We evaluated the impact of repeated fires and their season of occurrenc...
متن کاملA grass–fire cycle eliminates an obligate-seeding tree in a tropical savanna
A grass-fire cycle in Australian tropical savannas has been postulated as driving the regional decline of the obligate-seeding conifer Callitris intratropica and other fire-sensitive components of the regional flora and fauna, due to proliferation of flammable native grasses. We tested the hypothesis that a high-biomass invasive savanna grass drives a positive feedback process where intense fir...
متن کاملA Generic Modeling of Fire Impact in a Tree-Grass Savanna Model
We propose and study a model for treegrass interactions in the context of savannas which are subjected to fire pressure. Several theoretical models in the literature which have highlighted the impact of fire on tree-grass interactions did not explicitly deal with the indirect feedback of dry grass biomass onto tree dynamics through fire intensity and frequency. The novelty in our work is to con...
متن کاملPhysiological and Antioxidative Responses of a Halophytic Grass Leptochloa fusca L. Kunth (Kallar grass) to Salinity
The effects of salt stress on growth and some physiological parameters of halophytic plant, Leptochloa fusca L. Kunth, were investigated. The seedlings were irrigated with half-strength Hoagland solution and then treated with different concentrations of NaCl (0, 100, 300, 500 and 700 mM) for 15 days. The fresh and dry weights of both root and shoot were unchanged at 100 mM NaCl and decreased at...
