Gradients and subgradients of buffered failure probability

چکیده

Gradients and subgradients are central to optimization sensitivity analysis of buffered failure probabilities. We furnish a characterization based on subdifferential calculus in the case finite probability distributions and, under additional assumptions, also gradient expression for general distributions. Several examples illustrate application results, especially context optimality conditions.

On buffered failure probability in design and optimization of structures

In reliability engineering focused on the design and optimization of structures, the typical measure of reliability is the probability of failure of the structure or its individual components relative to specific limit states. However, the failure probability has troublesome properties that raise several theoretical, practical, and computational issues. This paper explains the seriousness of th...

Failure Probability and Remaining Life Assessment of Reheater Tubes

In this study, a real and significant industrial problem in a steam power plant was investigated. Reheater tubes in boilers are under the creep and the fireside corrosion mechanism that cause some of them to fail. Since the estimation of probability of failure (PoF) and remaining life (RL) is expensive and time consuming in the deterministic methods, in this work they were evaluated using struc...

A Computational Study of the Buffered Failure Probability in Reliability-Based Design Optimization

The buffered failure probability is an alternative measure of reliability that offers several theoretical, practical, and computational advantages over the traditional failure probability. It is handled with relative ease in design optimization problems, accounts for the degree of violation of a performance threshold, and is more conservative than the failure probability. This paper examines th...

Analysis of tropical storm damage using buffered probability of exceedance

This paper explains the new concept of buffered probability of exceedance (bPOE). Through averaging of data in the tail, bPOE compactly presents probability as well as loss value of the tail and has the capability to revolutionize the concept of risk-averse engineering. bPOE is demonstrated using tropical storm damage along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the USA from 1900 to 2013 (av...

Subgradients and Variational Analysis

The study of problems of maximization or minimization subject to constraints has been a fertile field for the development of mathematical analysis from classical times. In recent decades, convexity has come forward as an important tool, and the geometry of convexity has been translated into notions of directional derivatives and subgradients of functions that may not be differentiable in the or...
