GPS technology as a tool to aid pasture management on dairy farms

چکیده
This research determined the accuracy and precision of Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled devices as a potential tool to automate recording onfarm grazing events, which can be used indicate productivity paddocks (with number grazings per year), or, when combined with other farm data, estimate nergy harvested. Static tests were initially conducted determine devices’ (location error) (Circular Error Probability; CEP). Based on 11 Agtech 22 mOOvement tested, mean location error was 5.4 m 34.2 m, respectively. The 95% CEP 13.9 77.6 In subsequent on-farm study, cows in 400- cow milking herd fitted an ear tag two digitanimal collars. Data analysed for AM PM periods four days. collars recorded 62.3% total observations correct paddock, instead adjacent or races, compared 52.5% 45.2% tags. These results suggested that GPS technology isfeasible automated events. However, longer-term study is required demonstrate value this could have farmers.

Nutrient Management Behavior on Wisconsin Dairy Farms
Nutrient management plans for livestock operations should account for rates and timing of manure application to cropland, as well as how manure is integrated with other nutrient sources. Little is known, however, about actual nutrient management behavior of farmers, and what changes may be needed for farmers to adhere to nutrient management regulations. Detailed records were kept on fertilizer,...
متن کاملWhole-farm Phosphorus Management on Dairy Farms
Most dairy farms in Wisconsin continue to follow a fairly generalized formula of how to produce milk. Cows and replacement heifers are fed primarily homegrown feed from crop rotations comprising alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), corn (Zea mays L.), oats (Avena spp.) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.). Protein and mineral supplements are purchased to compliment dairy diets. However, the dairy indust...
متن کاملAn advisory tool to improve management practices affecting calf and heifer welfare on dairy farms.
We developed an advisory tool addressing 10 critical areas of calf and heifer management, including calving management, care to newborn calves and painful procedures, colostrum management, cow-calf separation, calf feeding, weaning, calf housing, heifer feeding, heifer housing, and general monitoring. Targets and indicators for each critical area were validated by a panel of experts and maximum...
متن کاملAn approach to nutrient management on dairy farms.
In the European Union, groundwater should contain less than 50 mg of nitrate/L. Individual countries have developed alternative strategies for phosphorus (P). In The Netherlands, regulations based on P limited the amount of manure applied per hectare. A more balanced P supply to the land has been achieved by transport of manure from surplus to deficit regions. Costs of processing of manure to p...
متن کاملShort communication: Evaluation of milk urea nitrogen as a management tool to reduce ammonia emissions from dairy farms.
The purpose of this study was to compile and evaluate relationships between feed nitrogen (N) intake, milk urea N (MUN), urinary urea N (UUN), and ammonia (NH(3)) emissions from dairy farms to aid policy development. Regression relationships between MUN, UUN, and NH(3) emissions were compiled from studies conducted in Wisconsin, California, and the Netherlands. Relative reductions in NH(3) emis...
