GPR Detection of Fossil Structures in Conductive Media Supported by FDTD Modelling and Attributes Analysis: An Example from Early Pleistocene Marine Clay at Bargiano Site (Central Italy)

چکیده
The application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) prospecting to the search fossil structures, particularly using advanced techniques like Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modelling and GPR attribute analysis, is currently poorly exploited in paleontology. Here, we promote use such a workflow at Bargiano (Umbria, central Italy), unique paleontological site known for discovery cetacean skeletons, dolomitized sperm-whale cololites (Ambergrisichnu salleronae), layered assemblages. study characterized by very uneven topography shaping highly conductive clayey deposits, representing not exactly ideal conditions surveying. After generating models encompassing real variable electrical properties media, simulated buried structures depth with different size geometry, operative frequencies. obtaining information on characteristics reflections, investigation depth, detectability, provide comparison experimental data, also used compute instantaneous amplitude phase attributes. Upon depicting peculiar signature our targets, discuss results light ground-truthing performed through trenching. Our allowed us restrict excavation areas, extending surface non-invasive way, optimizing field operations, necessary preservation site.

15 صفحه اولFreshwater Fossil Pearls from the Nihewan Basin, Early Early Pleistocene
Fossil blister pearls attached to the shells of an Anodonta mollusk from China, early Early Pleistocene, are reported here for the first time. The pearls were investigated in detail using a variety of methods. Micro-CT scanning of the fossil pearls was carried out to discover the inner structure and the pearl nucleus. Using CTAn software, changes in the gray levels of the biggest pearl, which r...
متن کاملUrsus etruscus Cuvier, 1823 from the Early Pleistocene of Monte Argentario (Southern Tuscany, Central Italy)
Ursus etruscus fossils have been recovered in the Monte Argentario site (late Villafranchian, Early Pleistocene, Tuscany). Teeth and bones show the typical morphology of the Etruscan bear. The occurrence of this species in the Early Pleistocene Monte Argentario faunal assemblage and other coeval sites (i.e. Pirro Nord) is very important in the framework of the Early Pleistocene biochronology. T...
