Good practices for designing and experimental testing of dynamically excited jointed structures: The Orion beam

This paper proposes a new lap-joint configuration, the so-called Orion beam. The setup is composed of two thin beams connected by three bolted joints with contact patches on each connecting bolt. beam suggests an assembly in which there are bolts dedicated to “static” functions guarantee structural integrity and those that perform “damping” increase energy dissipation due frictional contact. In particular, this analyzes influence beam’s design repeatability experimental measurements impact tightening torque excitation amplitudes system’s response. A feedback controller proposed control during step-sine tests vicinity resonance frequencies measure frequency response curves used such analysis. Additionally, single-degree-of-freedom Duffing–Van der Pol oscillator evaluate, through its calibrated parameters, several conditions multiple stiffness damping considering vibration mode promotes pronounced deformation around lap-joint. Due presence patches, results show structure maintained impressive after measurements. Besides, it possible for amplitude attenuation without significant losses stiffness.
