Global pedigree and national imperative: Hong Kong universities’ response to China’s grand strategies

Abstract Literature offers a theoretical framework exemplifying the inherent tensions between “becoming Chinese” and “remaining global” in evolution of international status Hong Kong. Adopting this framework, paper examines global position Kong’s higher education through an investigation universities’ participation China’s Belt Road Initiative Greater Bay Area development plan. Specifically, drawing on data from interviews about engagement with two Chinese grand strategies, discusses university leaders academics’ experience perception against policy context that foregrounds deeper integration national development. This discussion dialogue reveals different but overlapping scenarios for future sheds light link changing geopolitical contexts education.
