Global patterns and drivers of genetic diversity among marine habitat‐forming species

چکیده

Aim Intraspecific genetic diversity is one of the pillars biodiversity, supporting resilience and evolutionary potential populations. Yet, our knowledge regarding patterns at macroecological scales, so-called macrogenetic patterns, remains scarce, particularly in marine species. Marine habitat-forming (MHF) species are key some most diverse but also impacted ecosystems, such as coral reefs forests. We characterize drivers MHF provide a baseline, which can be used for conservation planning future monitoring programmes. Location Global. Time period Contemporary. Major taxa studied Bryozoans, hexacorals, hydrozoans, octocorals, seagrasses, seaweeds, sponges. Methods analysed database including estimates based on microsatellites more than 9,000 georeferenced populations from 140 species, belong to seven animal plant taxa. Focusing expected heterozygosity, we generalized additive models test effect latitude, taxon, status. tested correlation between richness diversity. The Magnitude of Global Marine Species Diversity

BACKGROUND The question of how many marine species exist is important because it provides a metric for how much we do and do not know about life in the oceans. We have compiled the first register of the marine species of the world and used this baseline to estimate how many more species, partitioned among all major eukaryotic groups, may be discovered. RESULTS There are ∼226,000 eukaryotic ma...

phylogeography and genetic diversity of the lesser mouse- eared bat (myotis blythii) in iran

in current study, 63 samples of bat populations collected from differ regions were used for evaluating the geographic variations. twenty cranial and dental characters for traditional morphometric and landmarks method on the ventral, dorsal skull and mandible for geometry morphometric studies were used. statistical analyses of traditional morphometric and geometry morphometric data indicated low...

Species diversity and genetic diversity: parallel processes and correlated patterns.

Species diversity and genetic diversity may be correlated as a result of processes acting in parallel at the two levels. However, no theories predict the conditions under which different relationships between species diversity and genetic diversity might arise and therefore when one level of diversity may be predicted using the other. I used simulation models to investigate the parallel influen...

Neutral model analysis of patterns of marine benthic species diversity

Caswell (1976) proposed a neutral model which calculates a theoretical diversity for a sample of a given number of individuals and species assuming no biological interactions between species. Disagreement with the neutral model predictions have been suggested as a method of detecting disturbance or stress. To test these theoretical considerations, 98 samples of marine benthic organisms were sub...

Global patterns of freshwater species diversity, threat and endemism

AIM Global-scale studies are required to identify broad-scale patterns in the distributions of species, to evaluate the processes that determine diversity and to determine how similar or different these patterns and processes are among different groups of freshwater species. Broad-scale patterns of spatial variation in species distribution are central to many fundamental questions in macroecolo...
