Global biodiversity and biogeography of rhodolith-forming species

چکیده

Unattached nodules of calcareous red algae (Rhodophyta), known as rhodoliths, are widely reported and studied in places that extend from the tropics to polar latitudes. Factors controlling distribution rhodolith-forming species remain poorly understood. A review global present-day rhodolith beds was undertaken, collating information on 106 10 families, representing 21 genera distributed through 11 realms: 1) Arctic, 2) Temperate Northern Atlantic, 3) Pacific, 4) Tropical 5) Western Indo-Pacific, 6) Central 7) Eastern 8) 9) South America, 10) Australasia, 11) Southern Ocean. The Indo-Pacific Australasia proved be most diverse realms. Of 62 provinces across these realms, Southwestern Mediterranean Sea East Pacific feature highest diversity species. significant proportion (14.2%; 15 species) endemic a single biogeographic province. Species richness is weakly related sampling effort (r2=0.573) unrelated littoral area (r2=0.012). Even when high latitude excluded analysis, no correlation between found (r2 = 0.0005). wider, evolutionary-time framework revealed existence marine barriers geological age their final emplacement key elements explaining compositional differences rhodoliths former contiguous areas (e.g., versus Atlantic shores Panama Costa Rica, America; eastern Red Gulf Aden). Finally, we propose lower tropical Ocean compared (23 33 spp.), may linked higher abundance corals coral reefs which act competitors with coralline for space.

Biodiversity and Biogeography

As we have seen, life has been important in shaping its own environment throughout its 3.8 Ga* geologically recorded history. It has influenced earth-surface temperatures (Classes 2, 9, 10) through its involvement in the geochemical cycles that determine the world ocean’s salt content and the atmosphere’s composition (Classes 7-10). Overall, life’s effects have tended to compensate for the ther...

Biodiversity and biogeography of the atmosphere

The variation of life has predominantly been studied on land and in water, but this focus is changing. There is a resurging interest in the distribution of life in the atmosphere and the processes that underlie patterns in this distribution. Here, we review our current state of knowledge about the biodiversity and biogeography of the atmosphere, with an emphasis on micro-organisms, the numerica...

PYCNOIB: Biodiversity and Biogeography of Iberian Pycnogonids

Biodiversity and biogeographic studies comparing the distribution patterns of benthic marine organisms across the Iberian Atlantic and Mediterranean waters are scarce. The Pycnogonida (sea spiders) are a clear example of both endemicity and diversity, and are considered a key taxon to study and monitor biogeographic and biodiversity patterns. This is the first review that compiles data about ab...

Global warming and extinctions of endemic species from biodiversity hotspots.

Global warming is a key threat to biodiversity, but few researchers have assessed the magnitude of this threat at the global scale. We used major vegetation types (biomes) as proxies for natural habitats and, based on projected future biome distributions under doubled-CO2 climates, calculated changes in habitat areas and associated extinctions of endemic plant and vertebrate species in biodiver...

SpeciesGeoCoder: Fast Categorization of Species Occurrences for Analyses of Biodiversity, Biogeography, Ecology, and Evolution

Understanding the patterns and processes underlying the uneven distribution of biodiversity across space constitutes a major scientific challenge in systematic biology and biogeography, which largely relies on effectively mapping and making sense of rapidly increasing species occurrence data. There is thus an urgent need for making the process of coding species into spatial units faster, automa...
