چکیده
This study presents the results of examination cephalopod remains extracted from digestive tract 40 loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, stranded along Campanian coasts (Southern Italy, eastern Tyrrhenian Sea). We retrieved 23 cephalopods 16 turtles (frequency occurrence = 40%). They belonged to Sepia officinalis (19 specimens) and Octopus vulgaris (2 specimens), both them benthic neritic species, Histioteuthis reversa an oceanic species. Accordingly, loggerheads appear feed on bottom, seemingly in shallow waters, open seawater column; muscular items (S. O. vulgaris) ammoniacal ones (H. reversa). is first record H. as a prey turtle.

Morphometric pattern in Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758)(Cheloniidae) hatchlings from nests with different embryo development rates.
The geometric morphometric analysis of the shell of Caretta caretta hatchlings revealed that morphological variations may be related to incubation duration. Based on the overlapping of anatomical landmarks of the carapace and the plastron, it was possible to discriminate hatchlings from slow and fast developing clutches. Carapace and plastron of hatchlings from nests where incubation lasted les...
متن کاملDetection of polymorphisms of the mtDNA control region of Caretta caretta (Testudines: Cheloniidae) by PCR-SSCP.
Marine turtles are increasingly being threatened worldwide by anthropogenic activities. Better understanding of their life cycle, behavior and population structure is imperative for the design of adequate conservation strategies. The mtDNA control region is a fast-evolving matrilineal marker that has been employed in the study of marine turtle populations. We developed and tested a simple molec...
متن کاملNatal homing in juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta).
Juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) from West Atlantic nesting beaches occupy oceanic (pelagic) habitats in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, whereas larger juvenile turtles occupy shallow (neritic) habitats along the continental coastline of North America. Hence the switch from oceanic to neritic stage can involve a trans-oceanic migration. Several researchers have suggested th...
متن کاملOvarian Dynamics in Free-Ranging Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta)
Vitellogenin (VTG) is an egg yolk-precursor protein that serves as a nutrient source for developing embryos in oviparous vertebrates. The hormonal control of this protein has been studied in a variety of taxa, but details about the dynamics of this protein remain to be elucidated in sea turtle species. To investigate the dynamics of VTG in a multi-clutch species under natural conditions, 38 adu...
