چکیده
What is the status of claims about effects minimum wage laws? Empirical or praxeological? We claim latter. How can effect such legislation be best analyzed under assumption mis-behaving supply (backward bending) and demand (positively sloped, based on positing Giffen goods) curves? In usual manner: resource misallocation still occurs. But this only arguendo. More radically, curves are themselves problematic. Even more this, too, applies to «well behaved» as well. Key words: Backward Bending Supply Curves, Price Controls, Praxeology, Goods, Logical Positivism. JEL Classification: D0. Resumen: ¿Cuál es el del análisis sobre los efectos de las leyes salario mínimo? ¿Empírico o praxeológico? Inferior Goods, Giffen Goods, and Shochu
According to a well-known result by W. Hildenbrand [6], if all consumers possess the same demand function and the density of the expenditure distribution is decreasing, than the average income effect term is non-negative even if inferior goods are present, so that the aggregate demand must be monotone. We show that if the expenditure density is uni-modal and a certain relation between the incom...
متن کاملGiffen Goods and Market Making
This paper shows that information effects per se are not responsible for the Gi®en goods anomaly affecting competitive traders’ demands in multi-asset, noisy rational expectations equilibrium models. The role that information plays in traders’ strategies also matters. In a market with risk averse, uninformed traders, informed agents have a dual motive for trading: speculation and market making....
متن کاملFinancial Giffen goods: Examples and counterexamples
In the basic Markowitz and Merton models, a stock’s weight in efficient portfolios goes up if its expected rate of return goes up. Put differently, there are no financial Giffen goods. By an example from mortgage choice we illustrate that for more complicated portfolio problems Giffen effects do occur.
متن کاملThe Last Word on Giffen Goods?
Giffen goods have long been a minor embarrassment to courses in microeconomic theory. The standard approach has been to dismiss Giffen goods as a theoretical curiosity without empirical content. This note points out that the underlying theory is itself seriously flawed.
متن کاملA backward-bending labor supply curve without an income effect
This paper proposes an explanation of the backward-bending labor supply curve that is not based on the premise that the income effect dominates the substitution effect. Unlike the classical labor supply theory that treats working hours and work effort as being synonymous, this paper treats them as distinct variables in an efficiency wage model. A wage rate increase is shown to give rise to two ...
