Geochemistry and Geochronology of Early Paleozoic Intrusive Rocks in the Terra Nova Bay Area, Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica

چکیده

The Terra Nova Intrusive Complex (TNIC) in northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, results from widespread magmatism during the Early Paleozoic Ross Orogeny. According to field relationships, geochemistry, and geochronology data, part of TNIC comprises Browning Unit (BIU), which is associated with an arc crustal melting including migmatization Wilson Metamorphic Complex, later Campbell (CIU), attributed mantle processes. Zircon U-Pb ages suggest Late Neoproterozoic Cambrian protolith metamorphism (502 ± 15 Ma) WMC, formation (~500 BIU, Ordovician (~480–470 CIU. Sr-Nd isotopic characteristics BIU indicate predominant component (εNd(t) = −8.7 −8.9), whereas those CIU reflect both 1.8 1.6) −4.0 −7.5) compositions. These that occurring at ~500–470 Ma originated partial mantle–mafic crust components mixing felsic components. By integrating previous studies, considered be formed by a combination mafic melting, assimilation, magma

Highly Heterogeneous Soil Bacterial Communities around Terra Nova Bay of Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica

Given the diminished role of biotic interactions in soils of continental Antarctica, abiotic factors are believed to play a dominant role in structuring of microbial communities. However, many ice-free regions remain unexplored, and it is unclear which environmental gradients are primarily responsible for the variations among bacterial communities. In this study, we investigated the soil bacter...

Application of a Terrestrial LIDAR System for Elevation Mapping in Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica

A terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) system has high productivity and accuracy for topographic mapping, but the harsh conditions of Antarctica make LIDAR operation difficult. Low temperatures cause malfunctioning of the LIDAR system, and unpredictable strong winds can deteriorate data quality by irregularly shaking co-registration targets. For stable and efficient LIDAR operation i...

Formaldehyde determination in seawater. Preliminary application to coastal samples at Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica).

A sensitive spectrofluorimetric-FIA (flow injection analysis) method for formaldehyde (HCHO) determination was improved with the aim of analysing seawater samples. The fluorescence emission versus HCHO concentration shows a linear pattern from sub microg L(-1) to about 1000 microg L(-1). The reproducibility at 15 ppb level is about 2%. Interferences from other aldehydes were checked; only glyox...

Co-variation in soil biodiversity and biogeochemistry in northern and southern Victoria Land, Antarctica

Data from six sites in Victoria Land (72–77oS) investigating co-variation in soil communities (microbial and invertebrate) with biogeochemical properties showthe influence of soil properties on habitat suitability varied among local landscapes as well as across climate gradients. Species richness of metazoan invertebrates (Nematoda, Tardigrada and Rotifera) was similar to previous descriptions ...
