Geochemical investigation of hydrocarbon generation potential of coal from Raniganj Basin, India

Abstract Methane content in a coal seam is necessary parameter for evaluating bed gas, and it poses an environmental risk to underground mining activities. Keeping pace with comprehensive studies of 12 samples were selected from the Sitarampur block Raniganj Coalfield analysis. The Petrographic examination illustrated that significant values reactive macerals present demonstrate organic matter dominated by prominent source aromatic hydrocarbons minor proportion aliphatic hydrocarbon, which falls region (Type III) kerogen, confirms suitability potential hydrocarbon generation. “A” factor (aliphatic/aromatic bands) “C” (carbonyl/carboxyl value concluded sample has lowest aromaticity highest hydrocarbon-generating potential, was also validated Van Krevelen diagram. diagram plots between H/C O/C ratio indicate lie type III bituminous (gas prone zone) block, confirmed cross-plot desorbed total gas (cc/g). situ are high enough produce methane beds. overall study concludes suitable generation extraction.
