Genetic structure of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) inhabiting adjacent South Florida estuaries – Biscayne Bay and Florida Bay

چکیده
Coastal common bottlenose dolphins show a variety of migration and residency patterns adding to the difficulty defining stocks for management purposes. Genetic structure plays an important role in identifying population dolphins. This study examines genetic differentiation both between two social groups occurring Biscayne Bay, Florida Bay adjacent group Bay. Skin biopsy samples were sequenced at mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region genotyped microsatellite loci. Significant was found (mtDNA FST = 0.139, p ≤ 0.001; 0.042, 0.001) supporting independent stock status these populations. Within evidence weak but significant using markers (FST 0.0149, 0.009); however, not evident from mtDNA-based estimates φST. The lack mtDNA coupled with field observations indicating overlapping home ranges suggests ongoing, though perhaps low, levels interbreeding. These data are insufficient warrant splitting this time.

Field energetics and lung function in wild bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, in Sarasota Bay Florida
We measured respiratory flow rates, and expired O2 in 32 (2-34 years, body mass [Mb] range: 73-291 kg) common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) during voluntary breaths on land or in water (between 2014 and 2017). The data were used to measure the resting O2 consumption rate ([Formula: see text], range: 0.76-9.45 ml O2 min-1 kg-1) and tidal volume (VT, range: 2.2-10.4 l) during rest. For...
متن کاملConcurrent Exposure of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) to Multiple Algal Toxins in Sarasota Bay, Florida, USA
Sentinel species such as bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) can be impacted by large-scale mortality events due to exposure to marine algal toxins. In the Sarasota Bay region (Gulf of Mexico, Florida, USA), the bottlenose dolphin population is frequently exposed to harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Karenia brevis and the neurotoxic brevetoxins (PbTx; BTX) produced by this dinoflagellate. Liv...
متن کاملThe American Crocodile in Biscayne Bay, Florida
Intensive crocodile monitoring programs conducted during the late 1970s and early 1980s in southern Florida resulted in an optimistic outlook for recovery of the protected species population. However, some areas with suitable crocodile habitat were not investigated, such as Biscayne Bay and the mainland shorelines of Barnes and Card Sounds. The objective of our study was to determine status and...
متن کاملHematologic, biochemical, and cytologic findings from apparently healthy atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) inhabiting the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, USA.
The objective of this study was to establish reference baseline data for hematologic, biochemical, and cytologic findings in apparently healthy Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) inhabiting the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, USA. Sixty-two dolphins were captured, examined, and released during June 2003 and June 2004. Mean, standard deviation, and range were calculated for each par...
متن کاملMercury concentrations in Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) inhabiting the Indian River Lagoon, Florida: Patterns of spatial and temporal distribution.
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) inhabiting the Indian River Lagoon, FL (IRL) have tissue mercury concentrations among the highest reported worldwide. Analysis of total mercury (THg) concentrations in blood collected between 2003 and 2012 showed a significant linear decrease over time (p=0.04). Significant differences in the spatial distribution of THg in resident IRL dolphins were also...
