چکیده
Free-electron lasers producing ultrashort pulses with high peak power promise to extend ultrafast non-linear spectroscopic techniques into the extreme-ultraviolet–X-ray regime. Key aspects are synchronization between pump and probe, control of pulse properties (duration, intensity coherence). Externally seeded free-electron produce coherent that can be synchronized femtosecond accuracy. An important goal is shorten duration, but simple approach shortening seed not sufficient because finite-gain bandwidth conversion process. alternative amplification a soliton in multistage, superradiant cascade: here, we demonstrate generation few-femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet pulses, whose duration measure by autocorrelation. We achieve four times shorter, higher power, than standard high-gain harmonic mode prove matches Fourier transform limit spectral distribution. By amplifying multistage cascade, laser achieved.

متن کاملMultiple Ionization of Free Ubiquitin Molecular Ions in Extreme Ultraviolet Free-Electron Laser Pulses.
The fragmentation of free tenfold protonated ubiquitin in intense 70 femtosecond pulses of 90 eV photons from the FLASH facility was investigated. Mass spectrometric investigation of the fragment cations produced after removal of many electrons revealed fragmentation predominantly into immonium ions and related ions, with yields increasing linearly with intensity. Ionization clearly triggers a ...
متن کاملCharacterization of ultrafast free-electron laser pulses using extreme-ultraviolet transient gratings.
The characterization of the time structure of ultrafast photon pulses in the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray spectral ranges is of high relevance for a number of scientific applications and photon diagnostics. Such measurements can be performed following different strategies and often require large setups and rather high pulse energies. Here, high-quality measurements carried out by ex...
متن کاملSpectroscopic characterization of vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser pulses.
Because of the stochastic nature of self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE), it is crucial to measure for single pulses the spectral characteristics of ultrashort pulses from the vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (FLASH) at DESY, Germany. To meet this particular challenge, we have employed both photon and photoelectron spectroscopy. Each FEL pulse is composed of an intense and spectrall...
