چکیده

Gender differences in paid performance under competition have been found many laboratory-based experiments, and it has suggested that these may arise because men women respond differently to psychological pressure competitive environments. To explore this further, we conducted a laboratory experiment comprising 444 subjects, measured gender four distinct situations. These were as follows: (i) the standard tournament game where subject competes with three other individuals winner takes all; (ii) an anonymized which individual against imposed production target is only if s/he exceeds it; (iii) 'personified' based on previous of one anonymised person unknown gender; (iv) 'gendered' whose known. We each situation; responded same no matter situation. Moreover, personified caused increase more than and, when associated was revealed, worked even harder outperform woman but strived equal set by male.

Psychological Pressure in Competitive Environments: Evidence from A Randomized Natural Experiment: Comment

In contrast with Apesteguia and Palacios–Huerta (2009), we provide laboratory evidence that strictly competitive environments are characterized by a second–mover advantage. This finding is obtained in a setting, a free–throw shooting competition among pairs of professional basket players, which overcomes the major limitations of Apesteguia and Palacios-Huerta’s randomized natural experiment. JE...

Psychological Pressure in Competitive Environments: New Evidence from Randomized Natural Experiments

Dynamic competitive settings may create psychological pressure when feedback about the performance of competitors is provided before the end of the competition. Such psychological pressure could produce a first-mover advantage, despite a priori equal winning probabilities. Using data from a randomized natural experiment – penalty shootouts in soccer – we re-examine evidence by Apesteguia and Pa...

Mind the (Gender) Gap A Follow-up Experimental Analysis of Gender Differences in Performance in Competitive Environments

Gender differences in the composition of competitive high-profile jobs have persistently contributed to the gender gap in earnings among men and women. Social scientists have suggested two important explanations for workforce gender inequity: discrimination and differences in preferences. In their landmark paper, Uri Gneezy, Muriel Niederle, & Aldo Rustichini (2003) presented experimental evide...
