In 2016, the CDC found that nearly half of individuals living with HIV in United States were 50 years-old or older. Although new infections occur older adults, overwhelming majority those who are over and became infected when much younger did not expect to survive long-term. antiretroviral therapy (ART) has made a very positive impact on course illness promotes longevity, is well known exert deleterious effects nervous system. Approximately 50% can be diagnosed Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND) which comprised several syndromes along continuum cognitive impairment severity. The growing number adults mandates both primary care providers geriatric specialists understand long-term consequences infection. addition HAND, these may impacted by "triple stigma," resulting from having three characteristics: older, gay HIV-infected. fact many have fragile social networks sustain their needs as they grow makes life for even more difficult. Older identify barriers accessing support including inability disclose status, irrational fear others HIV/AIDS, wanting burden, no available family members death friends AIDS.
