Gas Leakage From Shallow Ponding Magma and Trapdoor Faulting at Sierra Negra Volcano (Isabela Island, Galápagos)

چکیده

We report on new volcanic gas composition results acquired in October 2017 at Minas de Azufre, a persistent fumarolic field topping the resurgent Sierra Negra caldera, Galápagos archipelago. Our indicate that Azufre fumaroles are moderately hydrous (52–64 mol.% H2O) and rich CO2 (35–46 mol.%), with total sulfur (ST) being 21–35 times less abundant than CO2. SO2, most S species, is released an average rate of 19 ± 9 tons/day. Using volatile saturation model provides magmatic gases equilibrium western basaltic melt (48 wt. % SiO2) 400–0.1 MPa pressure range, we infer emissions consist mixture (a) magma-derived coexisting ∼50–60 (b) shallow meteoric water. thus propose supplied by outgassing magma stored ∼2 km deep sill-like reservoir underneath caldera floor, trapdoor fault system margin block acts as preferential pathway for ascent surface discharge. suggest that, contrast to majority volcano-hosted hydrothermal systems worldwide, releases relatively pristine gas.

Constraints on Magma Chamber Geometry at Sierra Negra Volcano, Galápagos Islands, based on InSAR Observations

We investigate the problem of estimating magma chamber geometry using InSAR observations of Sierra Negra volcano, Galápagos. Ascending and descending interferograms are combined to determine vertical and one horizontal component of displacement. The ratio of maximum horizontal to vertical displacement suggests a sill-like source. Spherical or stock-like bodies are inconsistent with the data. We...

Phylogeographic history and gene flow among giant Galápagos tortoises on southern Isabela Island.

Volcanic islands represent excellent models with which to study the effect of vicariance on colonization and dispersal, particularly when the evolution of genetic diversity mirrors the sequence of geological events that led to island formation. Phylogeographic inference, however, can be particularly challenging for recent dispersal events within islands, where the antagonistic effects of land b...

Deep magma transport at Kilauea volcano, Hawaii

The shallow part of Kilauea’s magma system is conceptually well-understood. Long-period and short-period (brittle-failure) earthquake swarms outline a near-vertical magma transport path beneath Kilauea’s summit to 20 km depth. A gravity high centered above the magma transport path demonstrates that Kilauea’s shallow magma system, established early in the volcano’s history, has remained fixed in...

Geodetic constraints on the shallow magma system at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat

[1] Ground surface tilts recorded proximal to a growing lava dome, and sustained through repeated dome collapses, provide unique geodetic constraints on the depth, size, and overpressures of the shallow magmatic system at Soufrière Hills Volcano. Tilt records identify a single pressure-source inflating with periods 3–30 h. Sustained tilt amplitude ratios for paired stations identify the pressur...

Timing magma ascent at Popocatepetl Volcano , Mexico , 2000 ^ 2001

Magnetic anomalies may be used to constrain magma ascent and are useful as precursors to eruptions especially when correlated with other geophysical and geochemical data. In this paper we present multiparameter data on the magnetics, dome morphology, geochemistry and seismicity associated with the December 2000^January 2001 eruptions, the largest of the recent eruptions at Popocatepetl Volcano....
