Gait Biomechanics for Fall Prevention among Older Adults

چکیده

In our currently ageing society, fall prevention is important for better healthy life expectancy and sustainable healthcare systems. While active outdoor walking recommended as adequate exercise the senior population, falls due to tripping slipping exist primary causes of severe injuries. Minimum foot clearance (MFC) lowest vertical height during mid-swing phase indicates risk tripping. contrast, coefficient friction (COF) factors determine occurrence from slipping. Optimisation MFC COF every step cycle prevents slipping, respectively. Even after initiation hazardous balance loss (i.e., slipping), can still be prevented long requirements are restored. Biomechanically, dynamic defined by bodily centre mass base support: spatially—margin stability temporally—available response time. Fall strategies should, therefore, target controlling MFC, balance. Practical intervention include footwear modification shoe-insole geometry slip-resistant outsoles), ankle dorsiflexors core stabilisers) technological rehabilitation electrical stimulators exoskeletons). Biomechanical concepts practically applied various everyday settings among older population.

Towards gait modeling for fall prevention

This paper describes a monitoring system prototype dedicated to fall prevention for elderly. Our system designed in collaboration with physicians, aims at assessing the risk that a fall occurs, relying on the signature of the walk. The signature is defined as a set of relevant characteristics, computed from the observation through a video camera of the behavior at home of the elderly and can be...

Measurement of Fall Prevention Awareness and Behaviours among Older Adults at Home*

This study surveyed awareness of, and adherence to, six national fall prevention recommendations among community-dwelling older adults (n = 1050) in Ottawa. Although 76 per cent of respondents agreed falling is a concern and preventable, fewer perceived susceptibility to falling (63%). Respondents had high awareness that home modifications and physical activity can prevent falls. Reported modif...

Suicide and its prevention among older adults.

OBJECTIVE To review the research on the epidemiology, risk and resiliency, assessment, treatment, and prevention of late-life suicide. METHOD I reviewed mortality statistics. I searched MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases for research on suicide risk and resiliency and for randomized controlled trials with suicidal outcomes. I also reviewed mental health outreach and suicide prevention initiatives...

Fall-induced injuries and deaths among older adults.

CONTEXT Although various fall-induced injuries and deaths among older adults are increasing, little is known about the epidemiology of these events. OBJECTIVE To determine the trends in the number and incidence of fall-induced injuries and deaths of older adults in a well-defined white population. DESIGN AND SETTING Secular trend analysis of the population of Finland, using the Finnish Nati...
