Future Swiss Energy Economy: The Challenge of Storing Renewable Energy

Fossil fuels and materials on Earth are a finite resource the disposal of waste into air, land, water has an impact our environment global level. Using Switzerland as example, energy demand technical challenges, economic feasibility transition to economy based entirely renewable were analyzed. Three approaches for complete substitution fossil with from photovoltaics called systems (ES) considered, i.e., purely electric system battery storage (ELC), hydrogen (HYS), synthetic hydrocarbons (HCR). ELC is most efficient solution; however, it requires seasonal electricity meet year-round needs. Meeting this need through batteries significant capital cost not feasible at current rates production, expanding pumped hydropower extent necessary will have big environment. The HYS allows underground balance demand, but building infrastructure applications working hydrogen. Finally, HCR largest photovoltaic (PV) field, already exist. model can be applied other countries, adapting solar irradiation, options.
