Future projections in tropical cyclone activity over multiple CORDEX domains from RegCM4 CORDEX-CORE simulations

چکیده

The characteristics of tropical cyclone (TC) activity over five TC basins lying within four Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) domains are examined for present and future climate conditions using a new ensemble simulations completed as part the CORDEX-CORE initiative with regional model RegCM4. conducted at 25 km horizontal grid spacing driven by three CMIP5 general circulation models (GCMs) under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6 RCP8.5). RegCM4 captures most features observed climatology, except intensity, which is thus statistically adjusted bias correction procedure to account effect coarse resolution. exhibits an improved simulation several statistics compared driving GCMs, analyzed. In we find significant increases in frequency North Indian Ocean, Northwest Pacific Eastern regions, consistent increase mid-tropospheric relative humidity. Atlantic Australasia regions show decrease frequency, mostly associated wind shear. We also storm rainfall rates TCs intense domains. Our study shows robust responses often, but not always, line previous studies, still implying presence uncertainties projection characteristics, need be addressed large ensembles high-resolution models.

CORDEX – An international climate downscaling initiative

The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) is backing an international initiative called the COordinated Regional climate Downscaling EXperiment (CORDEX). The goal of the initiative is to provide regionally downscaled climate projections for most land regions of the globe, as a compliment to the global climate model projections performed within the fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (...

Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclone activity

[1] Recent historical Northern Hemisphere (NH) tropical cyclone (TC) inactivity is compared with strikingly large observed variability during the past three decades. Yearly totals of the combined active-basin NH accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) are highly correlated with boreal spring seasurface temperature (SST) in the North Pacific Ocean and are representative of an evolving dual-gyre, trans-...

Daily precipitation statistics in a EURO-CORDEX RCM ensemble: Added value of raw and bias-corrected high-resolution simulations

Daily precipitation statistics as simulated by the ERA-Interimdriven EURO-CORDEX regional climate model (RCM) ensemble are evaluated over two distinct regions of the European continent, namely the European Alps and Spain. The potential added value of the high-resolution 12 km experiments with respect to their 50 km resolution counterparts is investigated. The statistics considered consist of we...

Evaluating the Impact of the GCM Dynamical Core in Idealized Tropical Cyclone Simulations

Using General Circulation Models (GCMs) for tropical cyclone studies is difficult due to the relatively small size of the storms, the intense convection and multitudes of large-scale small-scale interactions. These are mostly unresolved at typical GCM resolutions of about 50-100 km, and still challenged at high resolutions between 12-30 km. Nevertheless, high-resolution GCMs are becoming a tool...

Recent historically low global tropical cyclone activity

[1] Tropical cyclone accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) has exhibited strikingly large global interannual variability during the past 40‐years. In the pentad since 2006, Northern Hemisphere and global tropical cyclone ACE has decreased dramatically to the lowest levels since the late 1970s. Additionally, the global frequency of tropical cyclones has reached a historical low. Here evidence is pres...
