Future air pollution related health burdens associated with RCP emission changes in the UK

چکیده

Three Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) are used to simulate future ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the United Kingdom (UK) for 2050s relative 2000s with an air quality model (AQUM) at a 12 km horizontal resolution. The present-day attributable fractions (AF) of mortality associated long-term exposure annual mean O3, NO2 PM2.5 have accordingly been estimated first time regions across England, Scotland Wales. Across three RCPs (RCP2.6, RCP6.0 RCP8.5), simulated daily maximum 8-h (MDA8) O3 concentrations increase compared present-day, likely due decreases NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions, leading less titration by NO. Annual decrease under all 2050s, mostly driven sulphur (SO2) respectively. AF MDA8 is RCPs. Reductions lead reductions periods RCPs, both pollutants. Total burdens also highly sensitive population projections. Accounting projections exacerbates differences total UK-wide O3-health between up factor ~3 but diminishes NO2-health burdens. For PM2.5, accounting results additional deaths brought forward RCP2.6 RCP6.0, even though decrease. Thus, these highlight sensitivity health UK trends atmospheric emissions over as well

Air Pollution–Related Prothrombotic Changes in Persons with Diabetes

BACKGROUND Population studies suggest that persons with diabetes are more sensitive to the effects of particulate matter (PM) air pollution. However, the biological mechanisms of a possible prothrombotic effect underlying this enhanced susceptibility remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that exposure to PM causes prothrombotic changes in persons with diabetes, possibly via system...

Health burdens of surface ozone in the UK for a range of future scenarios.

Exposure to surface ozone (O3), which is influenced by emissions of precursor chemical species, meteorology and population distribution, is associated with excess mortality and respiratory morbidity. In this study, the EMEP-WRF atmospheric chemistry transport model was used to simulate surface O3 concentrations at 5km horizontal resolution over the British Isles for a baseline year of 2003, for...

Airways changes related to air pollution exposure in wheezing children.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between individual total exposure to air pollution and airway changes in a group of 51 wheezing children. Respiratory status was assessed four times (January 2006, June 2006, January 2007 and June 2007) during a 1-week period through a standardised questionnaire, spirometry, exhaled nitric oxide fraction and pH in exhaled breath condensate (E...

Comparative Assessment of Air Pollution–Related Health Risks in Houston

BACKGROUND Airborne emissions from numerous point, area, and mobile sources, along with stagnant meteorologic conditions, contribute to frequent episodes of elevated air pollution in Houston, Texas. To address this problem, decision makers must set priorities among thousands of individual air pollutants as they formulate effective and efficient mitigation strategies. OBJECTIVES Our aim was to...
