Fungal-Based Biopesticide Formulations to Control Nymphs and Adults of the Desert Locust, Schistocerca gregaria Forskål (Orthoptera: Acrididae): A Laboratory and Field Cage Study

چکیده
This is the first field study in which we have tested efficacy of four different entomopathogenic fungal (EPF) formulations together single study—i.e., Green Muscle, Guard, Metarhizium anisopliae, and an isolate Beauveria bassiana (isolate WG-11)—against nymphs adults desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria Forskål (Orthoptera: Acrididae). We conducted several studies: (a) lethal bioassay against 3rd, 5th, adult stages under laboratory conditions; (b) sublethal effects on reproduction, diet consumption, fecal production, weight gain; (c) a greenhouse trial; (d) cage trial. Under conditions, all EPF caused significant mortality, highest was observed with followed by B. bassiana, M. anisopliae. Susceptibility found to be greatest 3rd-instar nymphs, 5th instars, then adults. Along effects, doses reduced number egg pods per female, total eggs pod, hatching, while extending nymphal developmental time reducing longevity; again, Muscle performed better. Sublethal not only retarded but also behavioral changes, including reductions food gain. All produced mortality very well conditions. The maximum (81.7% 74.0%), 5th-instar (73.3% 65.1%), locusts (67.5% 58.9%) when using trials, respectively. current showed that potential reduce pest populations, could used integrated management program.

On the origin of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål) (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Cyrtacanthacridinae).
The locust genus Schistocerca (Stål) has a transatlantic disjunction, which has been controversial for more than a century. Among 50 species within the genus, only one species, the desert locust (S. gregaria Forskål), occurs in the Old World, and the rest occur in the New World. Earlier taxonomists suggested that the desert locust is a migrant from America, but this view was strongly challenged...
متن کاملPotential of the Desert Locust Schistocerca gregaria (Orthoptera: Acrididae) as an Unconventional Source of Dietary and Therapeutic Sterols
Insects are increasingly being recognized not only as a source of food to feed the ever growing world population but also as potential sources of new products and therapeutic agents, among which are sterols. In this study, we sought to profile sterols and their derivatives present in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, focusing on those with potential importance as dietary and therapeutic...
متن کاملThe hind wing of the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria Forskål). I. Functional morphology and mode of operation.
Detailed morphological investigation, mechanical testing and high-speed cinematography and stroboscopic examination of desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, in flight show that their hind wings are adapted to deform cyclically and automatically through the wing stroke and that the deformations are subtly dependent on the wings' structure: their shape, venation and vein design and the local pro...
متن کاملThe vibrational startle response of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria.
Substratum vibrations elicit a fast startle response in unrestrained quiescent desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria). The response is graded with stimulus intensity and consists of a small, rapid but conspicuous movement of the legs and body, but it does not result in any positional change of the animal. With stimuli just above threshold, it begins with a fast twitch of the hindlegs generated ...
متن کاملThe hind wing of the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria Forskål). II. Mechanical properties and functioning of the membrane.
As part of an investigation of the functional mechanics of the hind wing of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria, the Young's modulus of the membrane was measured using a newly developed universal materials test machine capable of testing very small specimens of cuticle, down to 1 mm gauge length. Strain was measured optically. Specimens were cut from various locations around the wing and te...
