چکیده

Introduction Up to 80% of post-stroke patients present upper-limb motor impairment (ULMI), causing functional limitations in daily activities and loss independence. UMLI is seldom fully recovered after stroke when using conventional therapeutic approaches. Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy (FEST) controlled by Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) an alternative that may induce neuroplastic changes, even chronic patients. The purpose this work was evaluate the effects a P300-based BCI-controlled FEST intervention, for ULMI recovery Methods A non-randomized pilot study conducted, including 14 divided into 2 groups: BCI-FEST, Conventional Therapy. Assessments Upper limb functionality with Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), performance Fugl–Meyer assessment (FMA), Independence Measure (FIM) spasticity through Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) were performed at baseline carrying out 20 therapy sessions, obtained scores compared Chi square Mann–Whitney U statistical tests (

Myoelectrically driven functional electrical stimulation may increase motor recovery of upper limb in poststroke subjects: a randomized controlled pilot study.

The objective of this randomized controlled pilot study was to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of myoelectrically controlled functional electrical stimulation (MeCFES) for rehabilitation of the upper limb in poststroke subjects. Eleven poststroke hemiparetic subjects with residual proximal control of the arm, but impaired volitional opening of the paretic hand, were enrolled and random...

Effect of Mirror Therapy on the Motor Recovery in Patients After Stroke: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Objectives: One of the most important problems seen in patients after stroke is that they cannot develop normal muscle strength. In recent years, the use of Mirror Therapy (MT) in the recovery of this condition has been noticed in different studies. This study investigated the effect of MT on motor recovery in patients after stroke. Methods: In this clinical trial, 93 patients were divided int...

Functional electrical stimulation enhancement of upper extremity functional recovery during stroke rehabilitation: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE To test if functional electrical stimulation (FES) can enhance the recovery of upper extremity function during early stroke rehabilitation. METHODS Open-label block-randomized trial, begun during inpatient rehabilitation and continued at the patients' home. Patients were assigned to either FES combined with task-specific upper extremity rehabilitation (n = 7) or a control group that...

Effects of brain-computer interface-based functional electrical stimulation on brain activation in stroke patients: a pilot randomized controlled trial

[Purpose] This study sought to determine the effects of brain-computer interface-based functional electrical stimulation (BCI-FES) on brain activation in patients with stroke. [Subjects] The subjects were randomized to in a BCI-FES group (n=5) and a functional electrical stimulation (FES) group (n=5). [Methods] Patients in the BCI-FES group received ankle dorsiflexion training with FES for 30 m...

Effect of intensive functional electrical stimulation therapy on the upper limb motor recovery after stroke: Single case study of a chronic stroke patient

This case report describes a stroke patient who participated in an intensive functional electrical stimulation (FES) therapy that consisted of task-specific upper arm movements with a combination of pre-programmed electrical stimulation and manually assisted motion. The patient was a 22-year-old woman who had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke 2 years earlier. Motor function of the upper extremity w...
