Full-time hours, part-time work: questioning the sufficiency of working hours as a measure of employment status

Although distinctions between full-time and part-time work are vital for understanding inequalities at home, consensus critical reflection lacking in how employment status should be defined. Full-time often represented as a binary split those working under or over specific number of hours. However, this paper, using exploratory mixed methods, evidences problems with assumptions based on working-hour thresholds highlights the importance workplace culture household contexts. Using UK Labour Force Survey we reveal ambiguities reporting 12% workers when comparing definitions days, hours self-assessment. Ambiguities particularly prevalent among mothers almost third, who would regarded hour-based measures, classified ambiguous according to measures used here. In-depth interviews parents self-classify workers, despite 35 week, mechanisms behind ambiguity within group linked organisational norms, previous divisions labour. The paper therefore argues contexts crucial recommends taken into account new multidimensional measures.
