From tip to toe – dressing centrioles in γTuRC

ABSTRACT Centrioles are microtubule-based cylindrical structures that assemble the centrosome and template formation of cilia. The proximal part centrioles is associated with pericentriolar material, a protein scaffold from which microtubules nucleated. This activity mediated by γ-tubulin ring complex (γTuRC) whose central role in centrosomal microtubule organization has been recognized for decades. However, accumulating evidence suggests γTuRC at this organelle neither restricted to material nor limited nucleation. Instead, found along entire centriole cylinder, subdistal appendages, inside lumen, where its canonical function as nucleator might be supplemented or replaced anchoring stabilization, respectively. In Opinion, we discuss recent insights into expanded repertoire activities how distinct subpopulations act concert ensure cilia biogenesis function, ultimately supporting cell proliferation, differentiation homeostasis. We propose classical view material-associated needs revised.
