Fresh and saline submarine groundwater discharge in a large coastal inlet affected by seasonal upwelling

چکیده
Submarine groundwater discharge is recognized as a major source of chemicals to the global ocean, exerting large control over coastal water composition. Radon and 226Ra are used evaluate, for first time, occurrence magnitude submarine in Ría de Vigo, large, highly productive embayment affected by seasonal, wind-driven upwelling. The system naturally enriched 222Rn due regional granitic basement geology: high activities (up 106 Bq m?3) detected wells boreholes drainage basin embayment. High (>400 also measured certain areas Comparatively lower (<4 103 were freshwater sources bay. Mass balances obtained with box model perform volumetric estimate fresh saline Vigo under contrasting circulation patterns. Fresh shown be relevant hydrological component Ria balance, equivalent 9% ± 4% 23% volume discharged tributary rivers during winter summer, respectively. On other hand, recirculation seawater through permeable sediments capable filtering entire upper its seafloor <100 days might thus previously overlooked regenerated solutes system.

Investigation of submarine groundwater discharge
Coastal hydrogeologists and oceanographers now recognize the potentially significant contribution that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) could make to the coastal ocean. SGD may be both volumetrically and chemically important to coastal water and chemical budgets. A worldwide compilation of observed SGD shows that groundwater seepage from the land to the ocean occurs in many environments al...
متن کاملNitrogen biogeochemistry of submarine groundwater discharge
To investigate the role of the seepage zone in transport, chemical speciation, and attenuation of nitrogen loads carried by submarine groundwater discharge, we collected nearshore groundwater samples (n 5 328) and examined the distribution and isotopic signature (d15N) of nitrate and ammonium. In addition, we estimated nutrient fluxes from terrestrial and marine groundwater sources. We discuss ...
متن کاملEddy correlation measurements of submarine groundwater discharge
This paper presents a new, non-invasive means of quantifying groundwater discharge into marine waters using an eddy correlation approach. The method takes advantage of the fact that, in virtually all aquatic environments, the dominant mode of vertical transport near the sediment–water interface is turbulent mixing. The technique thus relies on measuring simultaneously the fluctuating vertical v...

Submarine groundwater discharge of total mercury and monomethylmercury to central California coastal waters.
Fluxes of total mercury (Hg(T)) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) associated with submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) at two sites onthe central California coast were estimated by combining measurements of Hg(T) and MMHg in groundwater with the use of short-lived, naturally occurring radium isotopes as tracers of groundwater inputs. Concentrations of Hg(T) were relatively low, ranging from 1.2 to ...
