Frequency-Modulated OFDM: A New Waveform for High-Mobility Wireless Communications

This paper introduces a novel waveform for wireless communication, denoted as Frequency-Modulated Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (FM-OFDM). By frequency-modulating an OFDM signal and further defining suitable cutoff subcarrier, the resulting constant-envelope (ensuring low Peak to Average Power Ratio) exhibits strong robustness not only Doppler, but also phase noise carrier frequency offsets. These impairments introduce additive error term at information-bearing subcarriers that is mostly concentrated lowest part of spectrum. No inter-carrier interference thus present, can be easily overcome by mapping information above subcarrier. Theoretical expressions numerical results prove superiority FM-OFDM over state art, particularly in high-speed Rayleigh channels and/or high noise.
