Frame-Dragging: Meaning, Myths, and Misconceptions

چکیده

Originally introduced in connection with general relativistic Coriolis forces, the term frame-dragging is associated today a plethora of effects related to off-diagonal element metric tensor. It also frequently subject misconceptions leading incorrect predictions, even nonexistent effects. We show that there are three different levels corresponding distinct gravitomagnetic objects: potential 1-form, field, and tidal tensor, whose independent, sometimes opposing. seen that, from two analogies commonly employed, analogy magnetism holds strong where it applies, whereas fluid-dragging (albeit some use, qualitatively, first level) is, general, misleading. Common (such as viscous-type “body-dragging”) debunked. Applications considered include rotating cylinders (Lewis–Weyl metrics), Kerr, Kerr–Newman Kerr–dS spacetimes, black holes surrounded by disks/rings, binary systems.

Frame dragging and super – energy

We show that the vorticity appearing in stationary vacuum spacetimes is always related to the existence of a flow of super–energy on the plane orthogonal to the vorticity vector. This result, toghether with the previously established link between vorticity and super–energy in radiative (Bondi–Sachs) spacetimes strength further the case for this latter quantity as the cause of frame dragging.

Gravitomagnetism, Frame-dragging and Lunar Laser Ranging

Gravitomagnetism is a phenomenon predicted by Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, it consists in the interaction generated by a mass current in a way formally similar to magnetism generated by an electric current. A number of experiments have been proposed and carried out to accurately measure the gravitomagnetic interaction. The LAGEOS satellites observations [1], using the GRACE models, ...

Debunking some myths and misconceptions about indexing

One of the most persistent myths in the investment industry is that it makes sense to use an index strategy in efficient markets, for instance with large-capitalization stocks, but to use an active strategy in inefficient segments. It’s important to note that the term inefficient is often used to refer to informational inefficiencies. But investors must also consider the full spectrum of costs ...

Myths and misconceptions about U.S. health insurance.

Several myths about health insurance interfere with the diagnosis of problems in the current system and impede the development of productive reforms. Although many are built on a kernel of truth, complicated issues are often simplified to the point of being false or misleading. Several stem from the conflation of health, health care, and health insurance, while others attempt to use economic ar...

Savant syndrome: realities, myths and misconceptions.

It was 126 years ago that Down first described savant syndrome as a specific condition and 70 years ago that Kanner first described Early Infantile Autism. While as many as one in ten autistic persons have savant abilities, such special skills occur in other CNS conditions as well such that approximately 50 % of cases of savant syndrome have autism as the underlying developmental disability and...
