Fracture properties of thin brittle MTM clay coating on ductile HEC polymer substrate

چکیده

Thin clay coatings can be deposited from water dispersions for the purpose of improved gas barrier properties and fire retardancy polymeric materials. Mechanical are difficult to assess, since they very thin (≈1µm). In-situ tests using a micro tensile stage in scanning electron microscope reveal thickness-dependent microcracking mechanism, Weibull parameters coating fracture extracted. Complex events identified, related weak coating-polymer substrate interface. A micromechanical finite element formulation provides values 5 MPa interfacial shear strength 1 J/m2 toughness. From multiple cracking behavior coating, ≈ 225 is estimated by parameter fragmentation diagrams. The method may extended other combinations brittle coating-ductile substrates.

Engineering ductile fracture in brittle-matrix composites

This letter describes a newly discovered phenomenon: ductile fracture in cementitious materials. The brittle nature of materials such as concrete and ceramics has prompted the development of various approaches to enhance their fracture toughness. Fibre reinforcement has been the common focus in the toughening of the brittle materials. Two types of fracture have been observed to date in cementit...

Effect of Constraint on Ductile Crack Growth and Ductile-Brittle Fracture Transition of a carbon Steel

Ductile-brittle fracture transition was investigated using compact tension (CT) specimens from -70 o C to 40 o C for a carbon steel. Large deformation finite element analysis has been carried out to simulate the stable crack growth in the compact tension (CT, a/W=0.6), three point-point bend (SE(B), a/W=0.1) and centre-cracked tension (M(T), a/W=0.5) specimens. Experimental crack tip opening di...

Estimation of interfacial fracture toughness based on progressive edge delamination of a thin transparent coating on a polymer substrate

Evaluation of interfacial toughness of sub-micron-thickness layers deposited on a ductile substrate is a challenging task which has motivated different experimental approaches. Fragmentation testing was used in the present study as a means of interface characterization of a silicon–nitride-coated polyimide substrate. During the test, after an initial rapid segmentation–cracking phase, the coati...

Forced tearing of ductile and brittle thin sheets.

Tearing a thin sheet by forcing a rigid object through it leads to complex crack morphologies; a single oscillatory crack arises when a tool is driven laterally through a brittle sheet, while two diverging cracks and a series of concertinalike folds forms when a tool is forced laterally through a ductile sheet. On the other hand, forcing an object perpendicularly through the sheet leads to radi...

From brittle to ductile fracture in disordered materials.

We introduce a lattice model able to describe damage and yielding in heterogeneous materials ranging from brittle to ductile ones. Ductile fracture surfaces, obtained when the system breaks once the strain is completely localized, are shown to correspond to minimum energy surfaces. The similarity of the resulting fracture paths to the limits of brittle fracture or minimum energy surfaces is qua...
