Fracture Caging to Limit Induced Seismicity

چکیده
Geothermal resources offer a stable low-carbon energy source. However, geothermal sites can collocate with the hypocenters of large-magnitude seismic events. Large events pose risk to public safety and are therefore liability for efforts develop resources. Here, we propose “fracture caging” limit induced event magnitudes present evidence from numerical model predictions, laboratory experiments, field observations. Fracture caging involves drilling tactical production wells around injection zone contain fluids in fracture-dominated flow systems. Prior our work, effect small on growth large fractures through was subject debate. Our work shows that impede fracture high-pressure rocks. This containment offers mechanism seismicity.

متن کاملINDUCED SEISMICITY. Seismicity triggered by fluid injection-induced aseismic slip.
Anthropogenic fluid injections are known to induce earthquakes. The mechanisms involved are poorly understood, and our ability to assess the seismic hazard associated with geothermal energy or unconventional hydrocarbon production remains limited. We directly measure fault slip and seismicity induced by fluid injection into a natural fault. We observe highly dilatant and slow [~4 micrometers pe...

The characterization of fluid-transport properties of rocks is one of the most important, yet difficult, challenges of reservoir geophysics, but is essential for optimal development of hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoirs. Production of shale oil, shale gas, heavy oil and geothermal energy, as well as carbon-dioxide sequestration, are relatively recent developments where borehole fluid injecti...
متن کاملFrom Caging to Grasping
This paper digs into the relationship between cages and grasps of a rigid body. In particular, it considers the use of cages as waypoints to grasp an object. We introduce the concept of pregrasping cages, caging configurations from which an object can be grasped without first breaking the cage. For two-fingered manipulators, all cages are pregrasping cages and, consequently, useful waypoints to...
