Formed hallucination in the hemianopic field.

We present a case in which formed hallucinations were the sole presenting feature of an occipital infarct. The hallucinations occurred in the resulting hemianopic field. The localizing value of such phenomena is discussed.

Hemianopic visual field defects elicit hemianopic scanning

Previous explanations for the variability in success of compensating for homonymous hemianopia (HH) has been in terms of extent of the brain injury. In using on-line eye movement registrations, we simulated HH in 16 healthy subjects and compared their scanning performance on a dot counting task to their own "normal" condition and to real HH patients' performance. We evidenced clear parallels be...

Complex visual hallucinations in the hemianopic field.

From 120 patients with an homonymous hemianopia 16 experienced complex visual hallucinations in the hemianopic field. The brain lesion was located in the occipital lobe, though damage was not limited to this area. Complex hallucinations appeared after a latent period. They were weak in colour and stereotypical in appearance, which allowed differentiation from visual hallucinations of other caus...

Visually evoked responses from the blind field of hemianopic patients

Hemianopia is a visual field defect characterized by decreased vision or blindness in the contralesional visual field of both eyes. The presence of well documented above-chance unconscious behavioural responses to visual stimuli presented to the blind hemifield (blindsight) has stimulated a great deal of research on the neural basis of this important phenomenon. The present study is concerned w...

Influence of Hemianopic Visual Field Loss on Visual Motor Control

BACKGROUND Homonymous hemianopia (HH) is an anisotropic visual impairment characterized by the binocular inability to see one side of the visual field. Patients with HH often misperceive visual space. Here we investigated how HH affects visual motor control. METHODS AND FINDINGS Seven patients with complete HH and no neglect or cognitive decline and seven gender- and age-matched controls view...
