Forest owners as political actors

Conflicting interests make forests an inevitably political issue. We examine the roles that Finnish forest owners take as decision-makers and citizens. Inspired by post-political theories of democracy, we owners’ aim open, constructive treatment controversies between views, ideologies actors. Our data consisted a survey (n = 452) informed interview 24). applied mixed-method critical discourse analysis. The produced four alternative discourses forest-related controversies, major controversy being productivism environmentalism. ‘involved discourse’ positioned itself in these two ideologies, although closer to former. From this position, it expressed eagerness discuss any issue with anyone. ‘pragmatist criticised ideological environmentalism but did not perceive its own productivist ideology. ‘receding perceived environmentalist ideology one was eager policy issues. ‘uninvolved excluded thus dimension, from owner’s life. involved closest constructed ideal respectful, agonist, re-politicisation Recognition one’s while comfortably close hegemonic view seemed be main factor behind orientation.
